Hemp and Dog Anxiety
More and more pet parents are looking for natural alternatives to prescription anti-anxiety medications for their dogs. Cannabidiol (better known as CBD), is made from the hemp plant and has been shown to be effective in helping with stress, anxiety, and have an overall calming effect on dogs.
We should note that CBD/hemp used in pet products is not going to get your pet “high”. There is virtually no THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the compound that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties). That being said, you will always want to check for a company’s Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) to see what percentage of THC is in their CBD/hemp. THC can be toxic to dogs, and CBD/hemp is safe, so you will want to be sure of what you are getting.
For general anxiety or overall calming, you may find that a less potent daily maintenance CBD/hemp product works great for your dog of any size. But when you have a dog that experiences high stress during specific situations, you may want to go with a stronger, or even single use product. The typical recommendation for dog usage of CBD/hemp is 1–5 mg per 10 pounds of body weight. If your dog is taking any regular medications, we recommend discussing adding CBD/hemp with your Vet before going ahead.
CBD/hemp has so many beneficial properties for dogs and their humans alike. When a quality product is used properly, CBD/hemp can be a great solution for a happy, relaxed life for your pup!
